City's loss at St Mary's, coupled with Manchester United's win over Everton, has left the Premier League champions with a mountain to climb as they look to retain their title. The Citizens find themselves 12 points adrift of their rivals with 12 games to play.

Zabaleta admits that it took a few days to come to terms with the defeat, but says they will come back stronger and more determined ahead of their FA Cup clash with Leeds on Sunday, and for the remainder of the season.

"We had a great session on Wednesday afternoon and the feeling among the lads is very positive," the 28-year-old was quoted as saying on City's official website.

"Sometimes after a game like Southampton you need a few days to think about what went wrong and why, and then come back stronger and I believe that's what will happen.

"We will learn from this defeat and use the deflated feeling we had afterwards as an inspiration to maybe try and rediscover the sort of spirit we had last season.

"We need to stand together, battle and show what we are really capable of.

"We will aim to get back to winning ways at the weekend in the FA Cup and that is our immediate focus now."

The Argentine called Saturday's defeat 'the worst performance in years,' and the defender is fully aware of the ramifications of the result.

Nevertheless, Zabaleta still retains hope that his team reel in runaway leaders United, much like they did last season to win their first league title in 44 years.

"We know we gave probably our worst performance for two years or more last Saturday and it couldn't have come at a worse time because it was such a vital game in the title race, and United keep winning so the gap is even bigger than before," he added.

"But you never know in football."
