Kurz replaces interim coach Frank Kramer, who will return to his post in charge of the Under-23 side.
"I said from the start that I was unconditionally at the disposal of the club," said Kramer.
"I did that for the first team and I will continue to do the same for the U23 side. I will of course help the new manager with his tasks in any way that I can."
Kurz will take over on January 1, 2013. He has a long and established career in professional football behind him, having made over 300 Bundesliga appearances for numerous German top-flight clubs including Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Marco Kurz has been unveiled as the new TSG 1899 Hoffenheim manager.
"The 43-year-old will take over as manager on January 1st 2013. His assistant manager will be Günther Gorenzel who worked with Kurz at TSV 1860 München and 1. FC Kaiserslautern."
