Manchester City crashed out the Champions League without winning a single game as Julian Schieber ensured a 1-0 victory for Borussia Dortmund in their final Group D clash on Tuesday evening.

Roberto Mancini's men could have at least qualified for the Europa League if they had won and Real Madrid beat Ajax, and, despite the Spanish outfit fulfilling their part of the deal, City failed to get the points they needed in Germany.

In a first half that was void of any real chances, and ultimately forgettable, only Edin Dzeko tested Roman Weidenfeller and Marco Reus hit just wide for the hosts when he cut in from the right.

Dortmund, despite resting several big names, came out stronger in the second half as Ivan Perisic and Kevin Grobkreutz both forced Joe Hart into decent saves before the hosts took the lead.

With 58 minutes on the clock, half-time substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski got free down the right and his low driven ball across the area was tucked away at close range by Scheiber.

City struggled to really create anything and Moritz Leitner missed a great chance on 75 minutes to double Dortmund's lead as he missed the target from inside the area.

Robert Lewandowski also tested the City goalkeeper in the closing stages as Dortmund bossed the game and ensured the Premier League champions are now left to concentrate on domestic affairs for the rest of the campaign.

The result marked City's second successive failed attempt at progressing past the group stages, with last year's adventure also coming to an end at this point, although they had managed third-place that season but eventually exited Europe at the quarter-final stage of the continent's second club cup tier.
