Goals from Marco Reus and Mario Gotze plus a Robert Lewandowski brace ensured Dortmund will finish top of the 'Group of Death', ahead of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax.

Although Frank De Boer's team enjoyed as much as 70 percent of the possession, the Germans' cutting edge proved too much for the Dutch giants.

And Klopp, while admitting it was 'not a walk in the park', was revelling in the way in which the Bundesliga champions have matured in front of goal.

"We scored goals today that we didn't score last season, despite already having the quality on board then," Klopp told reporters.

"Apart from talent, you also need to have a clinical scoring factor in your team. Although they are still all quite young, the boys have developed a lot.

"It was not a walk in the park and everyone that was here today saw that. Ajax had a lot more possession, but we put in a very disciplined performance.

"The goals were all nicely created and well timed. Ajax were tricky opponents, even if the result doesn't suggest that."

Meanwhile, Dortmund's director of sport Michael Zorc spoke of his pride at Klopp's charges finishing top of a tough Group D, the only side to remain unbeaten.

"You simply have to give the team a lot of praise for the way they marched through a difficult group, we didn't expect that," said Zorc.
