The draw means Arsenal's hopes of qualifying from the UEFA Champions League group stages remain in the balance with two games remaining.

Schalke, who won at the Emirates Stadium two weeks ago, made a bright start in Gelsenkirchen but went behind against the run of play on 18 minutes.

Theo Walcott scored into an empty net after Olivier Giroud missed a one-on-one opportunity.

Giroud made no such mistake eight minutes later and doubled Arsenal's lead as he latched onto Lukas Podolski's cross to steer a diving header past Schalke goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall.

It looked like the Gunners would hold onto their two-goal lead at the break when Jefferson Farfan squandered a chance to halve the deficit but Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored on the stroke of half-time to put Schalke right back in the game.

Huntelaar should have drawn the German side level after the restart but was denied from a one-on-one situation by Vito Mannone.

Arsenal hung on as Schalke continued to build pressure but the equaliser came on 67 minutes when Farfan saw his goal-bound shot turned in by Thomas Vermaelen.

Walcott almost won the match in injury time but could only shoot straight at Unnerstall as the Gunners settled for a draw.

Arsenal stay second in Group B, one point behind Schalke and a point above third-placed Olympiakos who beat Montpellier 3-1.
