The former Germany international was forced off at half-time during his side's 3-0 win over second division outfit SV Sandhausen in DFB-Pokal action on Tuesday.
And with the Gelsenkirchen outfit set to welcome Arsenal in what is a decisive Champions League encounter next Tuesday, Metzelder faces a race against time to bring himself back into contention.
Though it is unclear how long he will be out for, the 31-year-old did reveal that he had torn the muscle.
"I'm afraid I have a torn muscle in the groin area," Metzelder told his club's official website.
