The Paris St-Germain attacker, who has fallen down the pecking order in the capital behind Jeremy Menez and Javier Pastore, strongly considered the idea of returning to Brazil, but has opted for a move to the Middle East instead.
Nene has been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career, netting 35 goals in 76 games for PSG, and had his best season at the club in 2011/12, scoring 26 goals in 45 games in all competitions, including 13 assists.
This term, however, has seen a change in fortunes with the 31-year-old starting only nine matches, scoring one goal, and he has been forced to watch as Ibrahimovic further improved his stock with an impressive 18 goals in 17 games in Ligue 1.
Speaking on French television programme Telefoot, he had this to say: "I have reached an agreement with Al Gharafa. It was difficult. I always had this dream of going to Brazil and the team of my family. It was almost completed with Santos, but it has not happened.
"These are things that happen once in a lifetime. I do not know if people will understand. I'll be 32 in July, the time passes quickly. I thought about my future, my family. That's why I'm going.''
Nene will now link up with fellow countrymen Diego Tardelli, Afonso Alves and Alex at Al Gharafa.
The club also has Australian Mark Bresciano in their squad and the arrival of Nene is one of intent, as they look to regain the Qatari League title, which they last won in 2010.
