Los Blancos went behind to a 35th minute goal from Riki, although Kaka was able to draw the sides level on 73 minutes before Gonzalo Higuain rescued the points in the final two minutes.

Jose Mourinho's men now sit one point behind second-placed Atletico Madrid and a further 12 off the pace of leaders Barcelona, who play later on the same evening.

Los Merengues may have had one eye on next week's El Clasico against Barca, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Fabio Coentrao, Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira all on the bench.

Madrid enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first-half, although it was the hosts who had the more clear chances, most notably in the 34th minute when Diego Lopez needed to come off his line in a flash to just get to the ball ahead of Abel Aguilar, who was waiting to pounce on Pizzi's delivery.

Just moments later Deportivo did find the opener, and in stunning fashion as Riki picked up possession out wide before cutting in and lashing his drive home at the near-post.

Madrid continued to hog the ball in the second-half, and a triple change on 57 minutes from Mourinho was enough to inspire the side into action, with Ronaldo, Khedira and Ozil all coming on.

Just a few minutes later the turn in tide was evident as Kaka produced a glorious curling effort which flew into the back of the net to tie the scores up at 1-1.

Ronaldo almost got his name on the score-sheet after dancing his way into the area and unleashing a low drive, but Daniel Aranzubia did well to get down low to thwart the effort.

However, with two minutes remaining the Spanish giants completed the comeback, Ronaldo advancing on goal before squaring the ball to Higuain, who had the simple task of tapping home.
