Since his return from a lengthy injury lay-off, Wilshere has been in fine form, and many see him as the man to take Arsene Wenger's team back to the glory days of the late 1990's and early 2000's.

In the 2010/2011 season, at the tender age of 19, he produced a midfield masterclass in the first-leg of the Gunners' last 16-tie against Barca as they secured a surprising 2-1 win in London.

Many feel that was the game in which the England international announced himself and his tremendous potential to the world.

But Alves believes that if Wilshere wants that endless potential to be fulfilled, he should follow former team-mates Alexander Song and Cesc Fabregas, as well as Arsenal's all-time leading goalscorer Thierry Henry, and swap the Emirates for the Camp Nou.

"He is a great player who we have met playing against Arsenal and without doubt he can reach the height of the players we have here at Barcelona like Xavi and Iniesta," Alves told reporters.

"He has a lot of quality and a great personality. If I was given the chance to choose, he is a player that I would sign for Barcelona."
