Jose Mourinho's team dominated the first half of the Champions League last-16 first-leg encounter at the Bernabeu but the second period was a more even affair as United earned a deserved draw.

Real started the match extremely well and created three excellent chances in the first seven minutes.

Karim Benzema found some space inside the area, but his left-footed drive slipped wide of De Gea's goal before Angel Di Maria jinked his way into a shooting position but his effort was off-target.

The Spanish side went even closer to opening the scoring when, in the seventh minute, Fabio Coentrao's low drive was tipped onto the post by De Gea.

In the 20th minute, completely against the run of play, Danny Welbeck beat Sergio Ramos in the air to head Wayne Rooney's corner past Diego Lopez.

Real responded well to going behind and De Gea had to scramble across his goal to keep the impressive Di Maria's low shot out.

On the half-hour mark, Real won a free-kick 30 yards out, and when Ronaldo's effort was blocked by the wall, he walloped the rebound narrowly wide.

Almost immediately Di Maria's fine cross was headed past De Gea at the far post by Ronaldo, who seemed to hang in the air for an eternity.

Welbeck almost scored his second goal of the evening when he flicked a shot past Lopez only to see the ball dribble inches wide of the goal.

After the break De Gea produced a fine save when he scrambled across his goal to keep Coentrao's effort out, but United also went close to grabbing a winner when Lopez turned the subdued Robin Van Persie's pile-driver onto the crossbar before the Netherlands international's mis-hit shot was cleared off the line by Xabi Alonso.
