The Argentine striker is aiming for a victory in the first-leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, and hopes to avoid conceding any goals to maximise Los Blancos' chances of coming out on top over the two-legged tie.
The 25-year-old spoke of the Red Devils recent record in the knockout stages - Ferguson's men have contested three of the past five finals - as he urged his team-mates to be wary of the threat posed by the Premier League leaders.
"I think it's quite a compact team," he said.
"They (United) always get through to the final stages in European competitions and there's a reason why. We will have to be on our guard.
"Our aim is to win the match and if we can keep a clean sheet, then that's even better. We know that an away goal in this competition can be important."
Cristiano Ronaldo will undoubtedly be the name on most people's lips when discussing Madrid's biggest attacking threat to Sir Alex Ferguson's team, however Higuain was reticent to single out one player for praise, as he feels there are a number of players who have the ability to cause United problems.
"It's difficult to choose, because I think that a team has to have everything to be a competitive side," he said when asked about Real's strengths.
"We have individual quality and we can be dangerous on the counterattack, but I couldn't name one thing, because a top level team has to have everything."
