The two played together for three years while Ronaldo was at United, and Carrick feels that it will take a mammoth effort to stop the former World Player of the Year.
"Everyone has fond memories of Cristiano. What he's done at Madrid is incredible and he's going to take some stopping," the England international told The Sun.
"I think we will need two or maybe three to mark him to be honest, he's been that good for Madrid. He's been sensational, to score so many goals so quickly - it's been astonishing."
Carrick also spoke of his belief that the Portuguese superstar deserves more credit for his accomplishments, and feels that were it not for Lionel Messi, Ronaldo would garner the appropriate accolades.
"Because of Messi, he maybe hasn't had the pats on the back or the credit he deserves because the other guy has been winning everything there is to win," claimed the United midfielder.
"But that shouldn't take away from what he has achieved at Madrid. He's a special player."
