It took just six minutes for the Catalan giants to break the deadlock and from then on it looked like damage limitation for Getafe.

Alexis Sanchez netted the first goal, calmly turning the ball past the keeper after latching onto Andres Iniesta's sublime through ball.

Iniesta was instrumental in the second, finding Thiago in the box who touched it down for Lionel Messi to steer into the bottom corner on 13 minutes.

The home side missed several chances to extend their lead before the break, but Getafe never threatened a comeback.

David Villa added the third just shy of the hour mark as he raced into the left channel before firing through the legs of the on-rushing Jordi Cordina.

Messi found substitute Cristian Tello on the edge of the box eleven minutes from time and the Spaniard swept it into the corner with a fine, curling finish to make it four.

Seconds later Alvaro Vasquez grabbed a consolation for Getafe, pouncing on a poor back header from Jordi Alba, and coolly stabbing into the net.

Barcelona added two in stoppage time to put the icing on their victory.

Iniesta fired into the bottom corner before Thiago beat the offside trap and squared for Gerard Pique who rolled home from close range.

The victory sees Barcelona continue their seemingly inevitable march towards another La Liga crown while Getafe remain in mid-table, nine clear of the drop zone.
