The home side dominated the early stages and had the first real chance after nine minutes, as Adil Rami rose high in the Barca box to meet a Banega corner but his effort was just over.

Ricardo Costa then went close with another headed effort and Los Che finally got their reward after 33 minutes, when Banega fired home from the left side of the box.

The goal seemed the spark the visitors into life and after some good link-up play, Lionel Messi was handed the chance to equalise from the penalty spot following a foul on Pedro by Joao Pereira and the Argentine duly obliged to send the teams in on level terms.

Valencia again got off to a fast start after the interval, with Roberto Soldado heading close and despite Barcelona showing flashes of brilliance, Ernesto Valderde's men remained on top, with both Soldado and Rami again trying their luck.

The home side's domination prompted the Barca bench to introduce David Villa into the fold and his extra directness certainly helped, with the player almost adding to the scoring with a well struck left-footed effort from the edge of the box.

However, it wasn't to be and the game finally ended as a 1-1 draw, with both sides fully deserving their point.
