Real Madrid had looked to be finding their best form of late and were unlucky not to beat arch rivals Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey in midweek, but Jose Mourinho's side were well below-par as they were easily beaten by Granada.

All looked well for the reigning champions, who will surely be deposed long before May, as they started brightly and kept the ball well as they began to get the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain into dangerous positions.

However, Granada slowly grew into the game and began to hold a threat on the counter attack and it was from one such attack that Alvaro Arbeloa narrowly avoided conceding an own goal after 21 minutes.

From the resulting corner though, Los Blancos shot themselves in the foot. Cristiano Ronaldo, so proficient in the air normally, faltered under pressure from Diego Mainz and glanced the corner kick past his own 'keeper Diego Alves.

Madrid's recently regained confidence seemed to drain away in an instant and they looked horribly short of ideas in attacking areas. Even the irrepressible Ronaldo looked lost as they huffed and puffed, but rarely looked like forcing their way back into the game.

Granada were well organised and resolute at the back and, although Madrid enjoyed plenty of possession, they couldn't work their way into the penalty area.

Their best chance came when substitutes Jose Callejon and Karim Benzema combined in injury time but the latter stabbed his shot wide from six yards out.

Mourinho put his head to his hands in exasperation as the final whistle blew on another away day defeat for his troops, who still sit third in the Primera Liga table.
