The Spain international felt current holders Barca were the better side in the El Clasico, and feels they will have to be more clinical in front of goal when the two sides meet for the return leg.
"We let them off. I think we were the better side, we dominated and we created more scoring chances. It's a strange feeling," Xavi told Barca's official website.
"We have been creating plenty of chances in recent Clasicos, but we aren't accurate enough in front of goal. Scoring goals is key."
"Everything is still wide open. It will be the same story in the return leg, but we'll try to be more effective," he added.
Man of the Match Raphael Varane's equaliser cancelled out Cesc Fabregas' 50th minute opener after a pulsating first half ended scoreless at the break.
Former Arsenal captain Fabregas was less disappointed in the result, and claims the Blaugrana have given themselves a good platform going into the second-leg decider on February 27.
"This is obviously a good result for us," the 25-year-old said.
"We were at the Bernabeu, a very tough field, and we will have our own fans behind us for the return leg."
