The Catalans had lost their first La Liga match of the season last time out, going down 3-2 to Real Sociedad, but they resumed business as usual to open their lead at the top to 11 points, with second-placed Atletico Madrid to play later the same day.

Lionel Messi continued his phenomenal goal-scoring record by netting four of Barca's five goals, starting off in the 11th minute as he rounded the keeper all too easily before slotting into an empty net.

Raoul Loe managed to pull the sides level after 23 minutes, but their day was soon made infinitely more difficult as Alejandro Arribas was sent off for hand-ball in the area, with Messi slotting home from the spot.

Pedro then got in on the action for the hosts to make it 3-1 heading into the break, although there were suspicions of off-side, while Messi scored his hat-trick just nine minutes after the restart after again rounding the keeper and rolling the ball home.

The Argentina superstar wasn't done yet though as he bagged his fourth two minutes later, breaking into the area to get to Adriano's cross first before putting the ball home to take his season tally in the league to a whopping 33.
