Jose Mourinho's side recorded a thumping 2-0 win at the Bernebeu in the first leg over the weekend and already had one foot in the last four, but the reverse ficture at the Mestalla was not without incident.

Casillas was replaced by reserve keeper Antonio Adan after Alvaro Arbeloa appeared to accidentally kick his left hand while trying to clear a loose ball in the area in the 15th minute, but when Karim Benzema netted just before the break to put Madrid 3-0 up, the match was just about over as a contest.

However, Fabio Coentrao picked up a second yellow card for a handball in the 51st minute and Valencia pulled a goal back shortly after when Tino Costa blasted the ensuing freekick past Adan.

Angel Di Maria then picked up a red card two minutes from time when he kicked out at Los Che defender Joao Pereira, when the two tussled for the ball.

Despite their two-goal advantage, they were unable to put Madrid under pressure and lost the tie 3-1.

In the semi-final, Real will face either holders Barcelona or Malaga.
