The Argentina international scored an incredible 91 goals in 2012 to set a new world record for a calendar year, while he became the top scorer in the UEFA Champions League for a fourth successive season.

Messi is favourite to take home the FIFA Ballon D'Or for a record fourth consecutive year after helping Barca to their best-ever start to a campaign, as they lead the La Liga standings by nine points after winning 16 of their opening 17 games.

However, the 25-year-old says the past 12 months felt less successful as the Blaugrana managed to claim just one trophy, the Copa del Rey, after they were dethroned in Spain by arch-rivals Real Madrid, while they lost their European crown to Chelsea.

"I am happy with my goals and my records, but this year could have been better with trophies," he told El Mundo Deportivo. "I always say that the important thing is the group, and my goals, without trophies, have no importance."

Last week Messi committed his long-term future to the Nou Camp by signing a contract extension through to 2018, and he echoed his desire to see out his career with the Catalan giants.

He said: "My dream is to finish my career at Barcelona and, with this renewal, I step closer to fulfilling that dream."
