The two sides looked to be heading towards the break still deadlocked at 0-0, but Xavi popped up on 43 minutes to put the Catalan giants in front.

Shortly after the restart Lionel Messi continued his phenominal form in 2012, firing home in the 59th minutes to make it 2-0.

Javi Guerra gave the hosts a glimpse of hope after halving the deficit one minute before the 90, but Cristian Tello made sure of the points with his injury-time goal.

The result took Barca back to a nine-point lead at the top after Atletico Madrid, had temporarily cut the gap to six with victory over Celta Vigo on Friday evening.

It also maintained Barca's unbeaten start to the season, with Tito Vilanova's men having won 16 and drawn one of their opening 17 games.

Valladolid, meanwhile, sit 11th in the standings with 22 points so far this term.
