Ferguson: Fanciful thinking

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has written off the chances of Cristiano Ronaldo ever returning to Old Trafford in a playing capacity.

Memories of Ronaldo's six-year spell with the Red Devils have come flooding back after the Premier League leaders were drawn against Real Madrid in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

The tie will mark the first time the Portuguese playmaker has come up against his former employers since leaving Manchester for the Spanish capital in 2008 for a world record £80million.

And while Ferguson admits he would love to once again work with Ronaldo, the Scot does not foresee that becoming an eventuality.

"I don't see it," Fergie said. "I would love to think it. Maybe when he is about 39 and you are coming past my grave, but it is fanciful thinking really.

"First of all how much would it take to get him from Real Madrid?

"Secondly I don't think there is any chance they would want to sell him anyway.

"You never know. I don't know when his contract finishes and he may want to go to another club at some point in his career. Of course I would hope he'd want to come here. But that is a long way off."
