Widespread reports in the Catalan and Spanish media claim the 44-year-old, who took over the reins from Pep Guardiola in the off-season, has taken ill again.

Vilanova had an operation in November last year to remove a tumour from his parotid gland before returning to work as Guardiola's assistant.

However, the Spaniard has suffered a relapse of the malignant growth, according to Catalan newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.

Barca have postponed all activities for the day, although they gave no reason for the decision, but confirmed that an announcement would be forthcoming.

The club released a statement on Wednesday morning which read: "FC Barcelona states that the press conference of president Sandro Rosell, scheduled for midday today, has been cancelled. The Christmas dinner which was to be held with the media has also been cancelled.

"The announcement of the winner of the IX Manuel Vazquez Montalban International Journalism Prize will go ahead today as scheduled. The club will be represented by institutional vice-president Carles Vilarrubi and director Ramon Pont i Ramon Cierco.

"Later today the club will release a new statement. Until then there will be no further statement on the matter. We regret any discomfort caused by this decision."

Vilanova has guided the Blaugrana to their best-ever start to a season, his side nine points clear at the top of the La Liga standings after winning 15 of their opening 16 games.
