Vilanova: Expects challenge

Vilanova: Expects challenge

Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova says any talk of the La Liga title being wrapped up is premature, despite their nine-point lead at the midway stage of the campaign.

The Catalan giants came back from a goal down to thrash closest title rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 on Sunday evening, with Lionel Messi continuing his stunning form in 2012 by notching his 89th and 90th goals for the calendar year.

The result also maintained Barca's unbeaten start to the campaign, having now won 15 and drawn one of their opening 16 Primera Liga encounters.

Vilanova, though, says he would never write off Atletico, or indeed third-placed Real Madrid, when it comes to the title race this term.

"In my first year (2008-09) we were 12 points back and we had to go to the Bernabeu and play for the title," Vilanova said. "Now there's a team that's only nine points behind us.

"I don't think that this title is ours to lose. If there is a team that has the capacity to win a lot of points, and they overtake us, then they deserve the title. It happened in 2009 and it could happen again.

"La Liga is not easy and it certainly isn't boring."
