A brace from Lionel Messi gave Barca a 2-0 win over Cordoba in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night, with Villa setting up his team-mate's first goal.
The Spanish striker was impressive in the first half, providing an outlet with his sharp link-up play, and Vilanova paid tribute to his performance.
"I'm very pleased with the work Villa has done," he said.
"He provided the assist for Messi and he gave us a lot of options up top.
"He played with a lot of rhythm and he reminded me of the footballer he was before his injury."
