Messi came on as a substitute shortly before the hour mark and immediately made an impact as he searched for the goal to tie Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals in a calendar year.

That dream seemed to fade away as the Argentine was stretchered off after colliding with Eagles goalkeeper Artur Moraes.

Messi has since allayed fears that he suffered a serious injury, and was well enough to train at the Blaugrana's Ciutat Esportiva training facilities on Thursday.

The three-time Ballon d'Or winner told reporters at a commercial event after training that he was feeling better already.

"I feel fine, luckily it was only a bang," Messi said.

"At the time I thought the worst because of the pain. When they examined me and discarded the idea of a serious injury, I was calmer."

However, he admitted that he fired off the shot before collapsing because he feared he might be facing a long spell on the sidelines.

"I thought it would be the last ball I would touch for a long time," the 25-year-old claimed. "Despite the pain I tried to play on and hit (the ball)."
