With Diego Simeone's men eight points ahead of their rivals, the game was one of the most hotly anticipated derby's of recent years and certainly lived-up to expectations in the opening exchanges, with both teams attacking from the off.

However, it was the champions who struck first thanks to a magnificent free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo which gave Thibaut Courtois no chance in the Atletico goal after 16 minutes.

The home side then started to really assert themselves on proceedings as both Karim Benzema and Ronaldo went close to doubling the advantage.

Los Blancos continued to press in the second half, with their iconic number seven again going close before clever link-up play between the Portuguese star and Benzema saw the ball fall to Mesut Ozil and the German duly converted to double the lead after 66 minutes.

From then on there was only one winner as Ronaldo continued to dominate proceedings, hitting both the post and the crossbar as Real closed the game out in expert fashion.

The win means Los Merengues are now only five points behind their city neighbours but perhaps more importantly, has shown us that Atletico are still far from title contenders.
