However, Los Colchoneros come into this encounter having only lost once in La Liga this season, a 2-0 defeat at Valencia at the start of this month.

Atleti trail league leaders Barcelona by just three points after 13 games, while they boast an eight-point lead over third-placed Los Merengues.

The Spanish champions, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's surprise 1-0 loss to Real Betis, their third of the campaign.

In team news, Real boss Jose Mourinho will be without defender Raul Albiol due to an ankle injury he sustained in the 3-0 midweek Copa del Rey win over Alcoyano.

Full-back Marcelo, midfielder Michael Essien and striker Gonzalo Higuain remain unavailable to Mourinho through injury.

For the visitors, coach Diego Simeone will welcome back goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who has shaken off an illness.

Midfielder Mario Suarez is also in contention to start at the Bernabeu having served a one-match ban, but Cristian Rodriguez is considered doubtful with a thigh problem.
