Karim Benzema had given the Spaniards an early lead in the tie with Sergio Aguero equalising from the penalty spot after Real defender Alvaro Arbeloa was adjudged to have upended the Argentine in the box.
Arbeloa received his matching orders as a result of a second yellow but City were unable to capitalise on their one man advantage.
Hart admitted his defence struggled to cope with the collective force of Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria and Karim Benzema but was disappointed with the way they conceded the goal.
He said: "All goals are disappointing. A free man from seven yards out, that's sloppy."
He added: "I don't know if it's a blessing but we're good enough to get back into games - we just didn't have enough time tonight. We move on to a big game on Sunday.
"All the games have cost us. We've lost our two away games and not won at home so I think you've got to look at both opportunities, we led in Amsterdam and Madrid so it's been a bad campaign for us.
"It is incredibly frustrating because we are a very good team and we've surprised ourselves in a very bad way. Unfortunately we weren't able to do the business when it mattered, and that's Champions League football."
City will have to recover from the disappointment fast as they travel to London on Sunday to face Chelsea, in what could prove to be a pivotal match in the race for the Premier League.
