City started nervously and Madrid were at their best on the night in the early stages.

The visitors took the lead in the tenth minute, helped on their way by some woeful City defending.

Angel Di Maria was given time and space to send in a cross which seemed to confuse everyone apart from the unmarked Karim Benzema, who fired home from close range at the back post.

Cristiano Ronaldo almost made it 2-0 a couple of minutes later, lifting the ball over Joe Hart, but he was denied by a goalline clearance by Matija Nastasic.

City were being outplayed but gradually settled into the game after switching to a back-four and finally registered a shot on target on 22 minutes, Iker Casillas tipping a curling effort from Sergio Aguero over the bar.

The hosts made a bright start to the second half and Aguero seemed certain to level in the 64th minute, but saw his close-range effort brilliantly saved by Casillas.

City finally made the breakthrough midway through the second period. Alvaro Arbeloa felled Aguero in the area and the Argentine stepped up to send Casillas the wrong way, while Arbeloa was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.

The Citizens pushed for the winner but couldn't strike the killer blow. Edin Dzeko blazed over while substitute Carlos Tevez had an effort saved, and a chance for Yaya Toure was skied over the bar.

City will now hope to qualify for the Europa League, while Madrid go through to the last 16 along with Borussia Dortmund.
