After Barcelona's cruise to victory earlier in the evening it was vital that Real Madrid walked away from the Santiago Bernabeu with three points from tonight's game with Athletic Bilbao.

They responded in perfect style. The men from Basque country started brightly but their ambitions were cut short in just the 12th minute as Luka Modric's superb ball over the top was brought down by Karim Benzema before the striker lifted it beautifully over the keeper for his first of the night.

Real continued to threaten and it came as no great surprise when the lead was doubled by a committed diving header from Sergio Ramos on the half hour.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors less than two minutes later as Benzema turned on the edge of the box and unleashed a rasping left foot curler into the far corner.

Bilbao did manage to get themselves back in things thanks to a lovely driven finish from Ivan Gomez just before the break that briefly silenced the Madridistas.

However, the hosts reaffirmed their superiority just ten minutes after the break with a rapid counter attack that ended with Benzema feeding Mesut Ozil to slam into the roof of the net from close range.

That wasn't to be the end of the scoring as Madrid continued to pile forward and substitute Sami Khedira added a fifth with twenty minutes left on the clock as his low drive slipped through the fingers of Iraizoz.

To be fair to the Bilbao stopper, aside from Khedira's tame effort, there was little he could do about the goals and he actually did superbly well to keep the score down to just five as Real threatened to run riot in the closing stages.
