Morata came off the bench to net the winner for Los Blancos as they kept in touch at the top of the La Liga front-runners with a 2-1 win at Levante on Sunday.
It was the 20-year-old's first goal for Madrid after only seven appearances, despite the striker having been at the club since 2010.
Mourinho has come in for a bit of flak for what has been perceived as an unwillingness to promote homegrown talent over big-name recruits.
But 'The Special One' had a few choice words for his critics following his side's victory at the Ciudad Deportiva de Bunol over the weekend.
"I was the one who brought him to the first team. I was the one who promoted him to the first team during three consecutive pre-seasons," Mourinho told the press.
"I was the one who insisted on giving him a contract for the first team and prevented him from leaving.
"We have [Karim] Benzema and [Gonzalo] Higuain, and you would all call me crazy if I played Morata ahead of them. People talk a lot, but we are just doing our job here.
"I don't know whether it's opportunistic, but I'm the one who played Morata. It wasn't me who let go of [Juan] Mata and [Alvaro] Negredo. I let Pedro Leon leave, but that's it."
