Celtic: Famous victory

A famous victory for Celtic as goals from Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt secured a 2-1 win over Barcelona at Celtic Park on Wednesday evening.

Barcelona started the game the stronger and Lionel Messi fired an early warning shot over the bar after being set up by Jordi Alba on eight minutes.

However, Celtic took the lead against the run of play. On 21 minutes, Wanyama was unchallenged at the back post as he rose above Alba to head in a corner to send the Celtic Park faithful into raptures.

From then on Barcelona enjoyed huge spells of possession and Celtic were forced to defend deep.

On 29 minutes Messi's half-volley hit the bar after interplay between him and Andres Iniesta, with Forster credited for getting a touch on the strike.

Seven minutes later the visitors were denied by the woodwork again as Alexis Sanchez's header hit the post with Fraser Forster beaten but Celtic held on to go in at half-time with a one-goal lead.

In the second half, Messi (twice) and Sanchez were prevented by top quality saves by Forster before second half substitute Watt doubled Celtic's lead on 83 minutes.

The striker capitalised on a mistake by Xavi, who deflected a long punt up-field into his path, to run clear and calmly slot the ball home.

Only minutes later he was free again and the Parkhead crowd roared for a red card as he looked to be brought down by Javier Mascherano - but the referee waved it away.

With 91 minutes on the clock Messi finally beat Forster from close range after the Celtic man had palmed away a shot by David Villa, but it was not enough and the Hoops held on to secure a famous triumph.
