The Norwegian striker has been without a club since leaving West Ham at the end of last season, and with Inter's Diego Milito sidelined for the remainder of the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury, the Nerazzuri are keen to add attacking reinforcements as they look to revive their fading Serie A title hopes.
Were the 33-year-old to impress on trial, he would embark on his second stint in Italy having previously represented AS Roma during the 2003/04 season.
Inter boss Andrea Stramaccioni was quoted on the clubs official website as saying: "I think that with Milito's injury the club wanted to look around to see if there's a certain type of player who might fit our purposes.
"Obviously we're talking about free agents within a certain date, so the options are limited. Our directors have identified that type of player in Carew and now he's going to have a trial with us, then we'll decide whether to sign him or not.
"It's a fairly normal procedure in other countries."
