With Partenopei having taken over as league leaders after a 2-0 triumph over Catania, the Bianconeri needed to win to reclaim top spot.

Matri gave Antonio Conte's men the perfect start in Verona when he found the back of the net in the 11th minute, before Stephan Lichtsteiner doubled their lead just before the break.

Cyril Thereau pulled one back for the hosts in the second-half, but Juve held on for the valuable three points.

"It felt like a great goal. Strange though, because normally when I strike it well, I don't score," Matri told the club's official website.

"But today it went well and we provided a great response to Napoli's win. These are the games that win you championships, not the direct encounters."

New Juve signing Nicolas Anelka remained on the bench against the Gialloblu, with Matri having claimed no-one wants to give up their spot for fear of losing it.

"Everyone wants to play, but unfortunately there are only 11 players on the pitch," he added. "As in every team, there is a pecking order.

"All you can do is give your all and give the coach something to think about. I'm not satisfied with being a reserve, I'm working to play in the starting XI.

"Pecking orders have to be respected, but you can try and change them."
