Santon signed with the Magpies from Inter Milan in 2011 in an effort to secure more regular game-time at the Premier League outfit.

The 22-year-old has since made almost 50 appearances for the Tynesiders, as well as having earned an international call-up for Italy.

The Rossoneri have had their eye on Santon as they look to freshen up their squad, and lower their wage bill, by replacing older players with talented youngsters.

"I know that Santon was a promising youngster. I don't think he has lost those qualities. It would be good for Italian football to have him back in the country." Tassotti told Sky Italia.

Santon, however, has refuted claims of a move away from St James' Park, telling The Evening Chronicle: "I am happy at the club, I have had a year and a half here and I really enjoy it.

"This is really important for a young player. We are a young team here and we are growing together. That will only make us stronger in the long-term."
