Stephan El Shaarawy put the visitors in front just six minutes into the match before Sebastian Giovinco equalised with an excellent free-kick later in the half.

The sides remained deadlocked throughout the second half until Mirko Vucinic sealed victory for the Old Lady soon after kick-off in extra-time.

It was a gritty performance by Conte's men who managed to knock Milan out of the cup competition for the second year in a row.

The Bianconeri currently sit five points clear at the top of the Serie A table and will now face second-placed Lazio in a two-legged semi-final next month.

Conte was impressed with how his team responded to their shock 2-1 loss at home to Sampdoria over the weekend.

"The guys knew that what happened on Sunday could never happen again, not so much the result but the performance," he told the club's official website.

"And I saw a great response from all of them, especially those who have had less chances to show what they can do.

"Milan are a great team and they turned up with their best side. We wanted to get through this round and we succeeded."
