The former Bundesliga player of the year joined the Red Devils at the start of the current campaign after a stellar season at Borussia Dortmund, in which he scored 13 goals in 31 games.

However, the Japan international has struggled to reproduce his best form for United this season, and Ferguson believes the player has been adjusting to the different playing styles between the two leagues.

"The difference between German and English football is that in Germany you can't foul," the Scot told the Telegraph.

"You are not allowed to touch anyone in Germany, so he has come from that environment to the Premier League which is totally different.

"There is a physicality to our game which is different from Germany, but next year he'll be better. I thought in the first half-hour [against Real Madrid] he was terrific and he was making some great runs through them."

Kagawa had earlier admitted his disappointment with his own form this season, but vowed he would continue to work hard to improve his performances.

"I'm not satisfied so far, but then I am always very critical of my own performances," he told the club's official website.

"Even worse, though, I got injured. I had to go through the frustrations that come with getting injured in my first season with the team.

"Now I'm just doing my best to catch up on what I have missed. There's a lot of pressure when you play for this club, but all I can do at the moment is keep working hard every day to bring out the best in me. I'm confident my hard work will pay off."
