The Red Devils made history some 14 years ago when they became the first English side to win three major trophies in one season, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League titles.

United are now in the running to replicate that feat this term, sitting 12 points clear at the top in the league, while also having one foot in the European Cup quarter-finals and a FA Cup fifth-round tie against Reading on Monday.

Ferguson believes that his current crop of players at Old Trafford are stronger than the ones that secured the treble in 1999, and Smalling reckons the veteran tactician is sure letting them know his expectations of them.

"The manager has stressed that he expects to go to the end in all three competitions," the England defender said.

"The FA Cup is notoriously unpredictable. Luton reached the fifth round this year, which shows that anything can happen so there is no point looking too far ahead.

"But our home form has been good and another victory can give us the impetus to kick on and get to another final."

Smalling added: "I was quite shocked at how long it has been since United won the FA Cup.

"It is a massive competition and one we all look forward to.

"Before we played West Ham in the third round, the manager stressed how much we wanted to win this tournament.

"There are quite a lot of lads who haven't won it despite being here for quite a while."
