Borini came on as a late substitute during the Reds' 5-0 hammering of Swansea, but was forced to leave the field not long after his arrival after dislocating his shoulder.

The 21-year-old was in considerable pain, and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the injury appears to be a serious one.

"I think he'll be out for the season," Rodgers told SkySports.

"It's unfortunate for Fabio because he has done his other shoulder before and had a similar thing so it looks like the early stages of that again, but the other shoulder which is a big disappointment.

"He came on for 15 minutes and looked quite bright in his movement and he worked very hard to try and stop the forward pass and obviously got injured."

It is the second time this season that Borini has been ruled out of action for a considerable period, having spent three months out after breaking a bone in his foot while on international duty in October.

Borini joined Liverpool from Roma at the beginning of the season.
