Dawson: Spurs man through and through

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas says he is lucky to still be able to call on Michael Dawson after trying to flog the Spurs club captain on his arrival in north London.

Villas-Boas accepted a £9million bid from Queens Park Rangers for the central defender in August but Dawson opted to remain at White Hart Lane and fight for his place.

After sitting out almost a third of the season, Dawson has now managed to convince the Portuguese he deserves a starting berth, with Villas-Boas admitting he was wrong to try and sell the 29-year-old.

He has since started the club's last seven Barclays Premier League games.

Commenting on his decision to allow Dawson to leave Villas-Boas admitted he was wrong: "Yes. I think we appreciate the fact we were able to hang on to him. We ended up being on the better side by the fact that he agreed to stay with us. We were lucky in that sense."

Villas-Boas does, however, admit he will need to offload one of his centre-backs, with Younes Kaboul back to full fitness, meaning out-of-favour William Gallas could be the player to depart the club.

"We won't start another season with five centre-backs," Villas-Boas added. "It's a difficult one. We have five top central defenders at the moment - a mixture of young players coming through with lots of experience, and then you have such tremendous central defenders as William, Dawson and Younes Kaboul.

"William has been a massive player for us this season. He's a player we trust a lot. Whatever we decide regarding his future, we'll have to wait and see, but we are aware of what a presence he's been for us this season."
