This, after the Toffees' push for a UEFA Champions League berth suffered a telling blow with their 2-0 defeat at leaders Manchester United on Sunday.

After a strong start to the 2012/13 season, the Merseysiders have had to fight hammer and tongs to remain within touching distance of a spot in Europe.

But the loss at Old Trafford has left them six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, and Moyes is not too proud to admit that the hill is getting steeper with every passing match.

"We are asking people like Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar, who we rely on heavily, and Leighton Baines to put a big shift in and do it for us every week," the Scot said.

"Maybe the numbers will allow us to have a good half season, but not a good full one. I hope I am wrong. We do tend to finish strongly. This time we have had a really good opening, so I hope we can do it again.

"But we are asking a small number of players to do it for a full season."
