City lost further ground on Saturday when they lost 3-1 to a resurgent Southampton side at St Mary's. And while the gap remains nine points, Manchester United have the chance to go 12 points clear if they beat Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Mancini has now conceded that 12-points might be too much to overcome with the end of the season fast approaching.
"Maybe 12 points is too much at this moment and we have not played well in the last two games," the Italian said. "This is strange because we played the whole of January really well, I don't know why we played so bad today.
"Southampton are playing well and it is difficult to score against them - I don't think a team like us can do a performance like today."
The 48-year-old was less than pleased with the overall display from the defending champions at St Mary's on Saturday. When asked whether he thought the performance was poor he said: "No, I don't agree, it was worse than poor.
"We didn't play. We played with maybe two players in this game and with 11 against two it is difficult to win."
