First-half strikes from Jason Puncheon and Steven Davis and a calamitous own-goal from Gareth Barry sealed the win for the Saints, who put more daylight between them and the relegation zone in addition to denting City's already slim hopes of retaining their Barclays Premier League title.
The win was new manager Mauricio Pochettino's first since taking over at St Mary's and Lambert believes they thoroughly deserved the three points.
"I think it's our best performance of the season," he told ESPN. "We were absolutely superb today and got exactly what we deserved."
The game could have been out of reach for City by half-time had Martin Atkinson awarded man-of-the-match Jay Rodriguez a penalty in the closing moments of the first-half.
"We looked for the early goal and looked to put them under pressure early and hope to capitalise on it. It worked perfectly. Then we went 2-0 up, which was even better," the Rodriguez said.
"I ran in and I think there was a little nudge, but the referee hasn't given it so we got on with the game. We pressed hard to take the game to them. As you can see, it creates chances and puts us on the front foot. We've taken to it well and put in a great performance."
Southampton now sit six points clear of the relegation zone while the Citizens could see rivals Manchester United stretch their lead to 12 points should they beat Everton on Sunday.
