Newcastle have well and truly come crashing back down to earth this season after the highs of the last campaign when the Magpies finished fifth and secured a place in the Europa League.
There was genuine belief among the team, and fans alike, that Alan Pardew's men could push on and mount a serious challenge for a top-four finish this term, but their latest defeat - their 13th from 26 games - leaves them languishing in 15th, just six points away from the relegation zone.
Nevertheless, Pardew believes his side will avoid the ignominy of relegation, largely due to their January recruitment drive that saw them bring in six new players.
"I'm genuinely optimistic about the team. I look at the run-in we've got and Man City is going to be as tough as this, if not tougher," he said. "But the other games - you'd like to think we're going to get plenty of points out of them with that team. That's not a bad team that."
The former West Ham boss also admitted his concern regarding the injury picked up by new acquisition Yoan Gouffran, who had to be stretchered off the field following a clash with Kyle Walker.
"He's gone away for an x-ray and we'll have to wait and see," he added. "It's not ligaments or cartilage. It's going to be bone damage if anything."
