Ramires, Eden Hazard, Frank Lampard and Marko Marin grabbed the goals for the home side to secure all three points for the west Londoners.

Wigan started the game the brighter of the two sides, Franco Di Santo dribbling the ball past Ashley Cole before firing a shot at Petr Cech, and Shaun Maloney testing the Blues goalkeeper with a curling effort before the 10-minute mark.

Chelsea, though, stepped up a gear and grabbed the opener through Ramires, who ran into an acre of space before getting on the end of a lovely pass from Fernando Torres.

The striker almost turned from provider to goalscorer moments later as Ali Al-Habsi, who had a poor game today, made a decent save with his fingertips from a Torres header.

The Blues had to wait until after half-time to grab the second goal of the game, Hazard thumping the ball home after great play down the wing from Cesar Azpilicueta.

However, typically for the Blues this season, the high of the second goal was followed by the low of conceding, as Maloney got the better of Cech from a tight angle just two minutes later.

The game descended into something of a scrappy affair for large chunks of the remainder, until two late goals put the gloss on the scoreline for Rafa Benitez's men.

First Lampard fired a reminder to Roman Abramovich of his worth by making a fine connection with the ball after a clever ghost from Juan Mata, the England man thumping the ball against the back of the net, and then substitute Marin scored with his first touch, nodding the ball past Al-Habsi after some shocking Wigan defending.

The scoreline was flattering on the Blues, but Wigan have only themselves to blame after their sloppy play made Chelsea's task of equaling the results of Spurs and Arsenal an easier one than it could have been.
