The Blues have won just two of their last six in the Premier League and lost 3-2 away to Newcastle in their last Premier League match, but boast a favourable record against Roberto Martinez's men with six wins out of seven against the Latics at home.

The hosts need a win to maintain their push for a Champions League spot, with Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton breathing down their necks.

Wigan have won just once in 12 outings, a run that dates back to November when they overcame Reading 3-2 at the DW Stadium.

The visitors are facing the prospect of yet another relegation battle as they find themselves two points from safety with 13 games to play.

In team news, Rafael Benitez can call upon Eden Hazard after the winger served his three match suspension for kicking a ball boy.

Victor Moses is still away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria, while Ashley Cole may be rested after picking up his 100th cap for England on Wednesday.

Petr Cech is definitely out with a broken finger, as is long-term absentee Oriol Romeu, while January signing Demba Ba may feature despite a broken nose suffered in the defeat to Newcastle at the weekend.

For Wigan, Antolin Alcaraz and Emmerson Boyce are in contention for a start, as is top scorer Arouna Kone, who has returned from AFCON duty.

Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) and Ben Watson (broken leg) are only expected back at the end of February.
