It has been a campaign to forget for the Villans as they currently sit in the drop zone after a run of eight games without a win and avoiding relegation has become the clubs main objective.

Lambert, though, has witnessed some encouraging displays from his charges of late and has no quarrels with their performances in the 3-3 draw with Everton and their disappointing 2-1 loss to Newcastle.

However, the Scot recognises that points are the only thing that will keep Villa in the top flight and has called on his team to get results even if they don't look good doing it.

"We had a chat the other day - they know what they have to do," he told The Sun.

"We're in a fight and it's horrible but winning covers a multitude of sins. If you play poor and win, you'd take that.

"I know we're in the entertainment business but sometimes that doesn't get you anywhere.

"The effort of the players is there in abundance. We all believe they can do it."
