Wayne Rooney insists much-maligned England and Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck can be just as a prolific a goalscorer as he is.

Rooney's match-winning goal for United at Fulham on Saturday took his tally to 13 for the season, and 10 goals in 10 games overall.

Along with Robin van Persie (22) and Javier Hernandez (14), Rooney has formed part of a free-scoring attack for the Red Devils this term.

Welbeck, though, has very much been the odd man out, with just one goal for Sir Alex Ferguson's side in the 2012/13 campaign as he struggles to secure a starting berth.

When given a run-out, the 22-year-old has been utilised mostly as a wide forward by Ferguson, which has significanlty stunted his chances on goal.

Rooney, however, believes Welbeck still has plenty of time to come into his own and make his mark for both club and country.

"Everyone labels him as a striker, which I have had at times when I have played in different positions," Rooney said. "Then someone says I haven't scored for eight games when I hadn't played up front.

"Danny has been out wide a lot this season. He works hard and brings a lot of energy to the team. He is a great player and his time will come when he gets that run up front. Then I am sure then he will score goals."
