With the Reds 2-1 up at the Etihad Stadium and 12 minutes left to play, Reina raced out of his goal, only for Sergio Aguero to get to the ball first and somehow net from an incredibly tight angle.

Despite both teams best efforts, the scoreline remained 2-2 until the final whistle, and Rodgers reckons his side let victory, and three points, slip away.

"It was an outstanding performance coming here, a notoriously difficult place where it is even difficult to score goals," the Ulsterman said. "We were brilliant. The only disappointment is that we were outstanding in our work but mistakes have cost us.

"Aguero's finish for the second was unbelievable but from our perspective we are bitterly disappointed he was in that situation. It was a mistake, everyone is clear on that, but I can't fault the players."

Meanwhile, Rodgers made special mention of Steven Gerrard's superb shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty box in the second-half.

"It was a brilliant goal from him (Gerrard) to beat Joe Hart, who is 6ft 5ins, from that distance," added Rodgers. "I thought his performance was immense."
