The game was a scrappy affair throughout, although the Royals took the lead after eight minutes, with what was the first shot at goal.

Kebe turned inside John O' Shea and fired into the top corner left-footed after a cross into the area caused panic in the Sunderland defence.

The Black Cats were level at the half-hour mark when Pavel Pogrebnyak was guilty of a clumsy tackle on O'Shea in the area, and Craig Gardner smashed in the resulting penalty.

The second half went much the same way as the first, with both sides unable to create many chances, despite the introduction of in-form striker Adam Le Fondre for the home side and £5million deadline day signing Danny Graham for Martin O'Neill's men.

However, the Royals won it five minutes from time when poor marking from the Sunderland defence enabled Kebe to head in Ian Harte's free-kick for his second of the game.

The result took Reading two points above the bottom-three, while Sunderland finished the match in 12th with 29 points.
